The history of the Islamic University named after Imam Ash’ari starts from 1992 year. The history of this university is closely connected with the history of the development of Islamic education in the Republic of Dagestan.
In the early period of its formation, the modest little Madrasah, under the able guidance of its founder, the scholar, Sheikh Muhammadsayyid-Haji Abakarov, was located within the walls of his own home in the village of Khushtada, Tsumadinsky district. The study was conducted, in a secret way, because of the political situation that was in the country, and because of it he had to face great difficulties.
In 1987, the scholar moved to Khasavyurt, and most of his students moved with him. After much efforts to improve the conditions of studying the madrasah had got a dilapidated building of the city school №6.
Those who wished to receive an Islamic education became more and more. Such factors forced the leadership of the madrasa to expand it’s building. And in 2003, a beautiful university building appeared in the center of the city, which proudly was named after the great scholar, imam of ideology and monotheism Abul-Hasan Ali ibn Ismail al-Ash'ari. (260 – 321 AH, 874 – 936 AD).
More than 25 years have passed since then, and all this time the university has been actively developing: we have trained over 250 highly qualified specialists in this area, established excellent partnerships with reputable religious educational institutions in the region, and foreign universities, where our graduates could continue their education.
The university occupies a leading place in the development of Islam and the development of Islamic knowledge in the city of Khasavyurt and in the whole Dagestan. The university combines secular and spiritual education, separate education for boys and girls.
Today Imam Ash'ari Islamic University is one of the largest institutions of higher professional religious education in Dagestan.
